The things that mean the most to me do not need remembrance

Those things are breath to me

natural as a child’s soul

If I’ve forgotten truth of life

perhaps the past can guide my soul

Surrounded by the gloaming green

and hasty trees who rush towards death

surrounded by the song birds cry

and water running in the cleft

I wonder what we remember

when we embrace that single day

what holds us to September

Ten years ago today

Perhaps the hero in us yearns

to return like he did that day

perhaps we’ve forgotten what it’s like

to surround our hero with decay

What are the reasons we remember

with so much pomp and circumstance

what are the reasons this September

That we succumb to our romance

Do we wish the planes fly again

the shining towers fall

do we yearn to return again

to a day we became us all

To a day when people walked like gods

in the face of certain death

far or near to any wreckage

did we realize our own wealth

Why do we yearn to return again

to that September day

What are we missing in our life again

that we choose to walk this way

When I remember the flaming towers

it is as if my soul

is calling to my hero child

to embrace his worldly role

It’s not lament I wish to hold

in the bottom of my heart

no matter the intent I’m told

by those wishing us apart

and I am overcome with life

as water dances in a stream

and trees around me rush to death

pushing past their green

When I remember that single day

10 years ago right now

I call my hero back to the fray

and am humbled, with a bow

And what a world would we pass on

if only we remembered this:

To live our life today, as we remember

Oh what a world is this…
