Cold Ground

The color is cold
Grey is the line
Against impenetrable forest
The sky and the Earth
In winter
Grey to white to distant blue
The sky and the Earth
In winter

So many tiny needles
Make a wall of the forest
What are walls for, if not to go beyond

White and green and brown ground
Down deep there are critters and creatures of the dirt
Keeping warm as anything on the surface
Struggles to survive
Cold ground

And smoke filters down and up
Just outside my window.
